Earliest meeting: Wednesday 29th May 1833 Final meeting: Friday 15th July 1870 The Hertfordshire Yeomanry can trace its history back to the late 18th century and has served the country in a number of Wars. In the middle of the 19th century the South Herts Yeomanry organised their own race meetings which took place in the park land of Hatfield House, traditionally the house of the Marquis of Salisbury. Racing first took place on Wednesday 29th May 1833 and continued for the next 37 years. At the meeting on Thursday 21st June 1866 Mr Ashby’s Black Swan had to battle hard to overcome Brown Doe to win the Officers Challenge Cup. The final meeting took place on Friday 15th July 1870 when a train excursion of 30 carriages from Kings Cross boosted the crowd who enjoyed witnessing Water Sprite land the Challenge Cup.
